Designing Piece of Mind

Purposeful Design as a Helpful Resource

It’s vacation Thursday for me this week and I couldn’t be more excited. It is my first big trip without the kids and I’d be lying if I said I wasn't anxious. Its hard to leave your kids for any amount of time and that anxiety heightens even more when your child has different needs.

My daughter is autistic and as a family we're still learning how to communicate effectively with her and anticipate her needs. She is nonverbal and operates much different than a typical child. We've never left her for more than a few hours for a date night or event - never overnight.

To put our nerves at ease & to make things easier for our sitters I created a set of visual guides to place on our fridge. I laid out our typical daily schedule, instructions and directions of where things are & what our kids are used to. I also added in some helpful tidbits about our pets & of course, the tv. Now all the important information is quickly accessible & no one has to worry.

Purposeful design can always help make life easier. What type of resource guides or schedules do you use to help your tribe?
